Tuesday Tunes-Cradle of Filth

Cradle of Filth is I guess what you would call an extreme goth metal band. They're from England and  formed in 1991. Side note...why are all the insanely awesome metal bands not from the US? I mean cool for them but sucky for us Americans who want to see them play.

When I first heard of Cradle of Filth I couldn't tell you but I do remember the very first song I heard by them...Hallowed be thy name which incidentally is a cover of another awesome band, Iron Maidens. How apropos of them to cover one of their songs seeing as they were a big influence on the members of Cradle of Filth and I do love me some Iron Maiden.

Before watching these videos make sure there are no children around, secondly if you are easily offended by the crude and naughty and slightly disturbing behavior just skip this whole post. If you are slightly interested in hearing what they sound like but don't want to watch then by all means, press play but don't look. If you don't care then enjoy my friends.

There is no official video and the others were all animated (blah) so enjoy watching some (silent) Underworld while listening.

 
The second Cradle of Filth song I heard was From the Cradle to Enslave. 

I was sharing a few of their songs on Facebook earlier this morning as I was listening to them and of all people to comment my Mom did. And I totally laughed at her comments. "I was good with this until he started singing" naturally I had to share more and push the envelope so I shared Lilith Immaculate. Her response "What the hell was that??? You can't possibly call Lilith Immaculate a song!" ROFL. Yeah I know they may not be everyone's cup o tea but the "nice" side of me loves to play Cradle of Filth during Halloween night just to scare the bejeebus out of people haha, hush don't judge me, I have a twisted sense of humor.

Tuesday Tunes-Avatar...the band not the movie

So I discovered a new band this morning. I love when that happens because then I spend the next few hours reading about and listening to their songs. This morning it was Avatar. I may just be addicted to them. I can't stop listening to them. In reading about them I quickly discovered they are from Sweden. This seems to be a common thread with all of the music I have recently discovered. Metal + Swedish. What can I say....they know how to do it out there. Not only is their music awesome but ::::cough cough:::: the bassist is a mighty fine specimen to boot.

So the song I heard on the radio was called Smells Like a Freak Show and I dare you not to like it. It's catchy and one of those songs that (if you like Metal) pulls you in and doesn't let you go, even when it's done you want more.



They don't have a traditional sound and I have to say that I LOVE it. I have listened to I think all of their songs now and I have picked two favorites. Okay three but I'll just share my top two so I am not overwhelming you with my love of metal. The first one is the song above, smells like a freak show and my next one is called Torn Apart. Actually if we go in order of favorites I would put this one as number one. 



Now I have a ton of things to do and I have spent enough time listing to all of their songs....no I lie, I am going to listen to some more while I finish up some work and clean the house.

Tuesday Tunes-One Republic

So I was late in the game of finding out about One Republi, I only discovered them about a year or so ago. I know I know, you'd think I was living under a rock or something but I very rarely listen to the radio when I am at home so the most exposure I get is when I am either taking the kids to school or running errands. Getting off track here....One Republic. I have posted about them before but with the new album coming out in March and such great songs, I couldn't resist sharing one of their songs again.

Feel Again I am sure you have heard on the radio. If you haven't heard it well then take a listen! There is just something about Ryan Tedders voice that just...soothes you. And it's not just his voice but the actual music as well. It's like peas and a pod. That group was made for each other.




I want to share more but I don't think I would be able to stop myself from sharing most if not all of their songs and I am not sure you all like me enough to sit here for hours upon hours. So instead I leave you with a question. What is your favorite One Republic song?

Tuesday Tunes-It's Back!

I am so excited, the awesomeness that is Amanda (High Impact Mom) has brought back Tuesday Tunes. Oh yeah, that's right Tuesday Tunes is officially back yo! If you've never participated in Tuesday Tunes before be sure to hop on over to Amanda's site and check out how to participate. It's simple and fun and who doesn't love being introduced to new types of music.

Has anyone noticed the increased popularity of dance types of music? I don't listen to the radio often because I usually only get the chance to when I am in the car...which isn't all that often but even I have noticed. Not that I am complaining, honestly I love it! But I have noticed that a lot more artists are doing it. And you will never catch me repeating these words, but there is one specific song that I am really loving right now....and it has Britney Spears in it :::GASP::: Yes you read that right I like a Britney Spears song. No I am not hanging my head in shame, instead I am laughing. She may not be my typical cup of tea but you can't deny she still knows how to kick some ass. 



I am not sure which version I like better, the original with Will.i.am and Britney or the remix done by Reidiculous. If you haven't heard of Reidiculous before and love music that's awesome to dance to you NEED to check him out! Seriously the guy is amazing.



Now if you'll excuse me I am off to go work dance by myself and do some housework but I want to know which version do you like better?

Tuesday Tunes-Soundgarden

 
I don't know if I mentioned before that I am a fan of Soundgarden. If I haven't I don't know why. I remember being in High School listening to Soundgarden while hanging out with friends doing things I wont mention in case my kids one day read this. Yes I was a wee bit wild in my youth. I love that I can hear a band now and it instantly brings me back. Some more so then others. Soundgarden happens to fall into the more so category.

I love that they are making a come back and with the song Live to Rise they've done a job well done with it. Although I don't think they needed to do it by hooking up with The Avengers movie. I think they are awesome enough to just come out with a CD and bam be back. Although I can't deny the smartness of the move and for those in the younger generation (omg I can't believe I just typed that) to experience the greatness that is Soundgarden.

Anywho, enough rambling, onto the music!

Tuesday Tunes-Songs to slow dance to

Well maybe you could have slow danced to these songs back in the 80's at clubs such as The Roxy but probably not now. I have to admit I am a little bummed that this month is coming to an end because I have really enjoyed taking a look back and doing Amanda's nostalgia theme. But alas all good things have to come to an end at some time right.

I have always been a big Duran Duran fan. There's just something about their music that speaks to me. I can't not listen to it. It doesn't matter what song may come on the radio, if it's a Duran Duran song I will not change the station. I know I mentioned my favorite song by them last week but I couldn't just leave it there because there is another song by them that comes in as another favorite.



Keeping with the slow'ish rhythm I couldn't pass up sharing Mad World by Gary Jules. Now I know it's not the original and I may be slammed for saying what I am about to say but....I like this version better. Don't get me wrong, the original by Tears for Fears is okay but I like the heart put into Gary Jules version. It's more melodic which in my opinion is what makes it a heck of a lot better.

It's week three of Amanda's nostalgia theme on Tuesday Tunes and today instead of keeping around my teen years I decided to go back a wee bit further. Just a wee bit though because :::cough cough::: I am still a youngin. I will not however be revealing the years because it should be easy enough to guess the time frame based on the music. I'm going to make you think while you listen to the music I have this week, I know I know so rude.

Tuesday Tunes-The era of mixed tapes

Making a mixed tape is not something we hear very often anymore. Those days are long gone, which is a darn shame because seriously what better way to tell your girlfriend I have the hots for you then with a tape filled with songs about being sexy. The 90's were an awesome time!

Continuing with Amandas nostalgia theme I dug through my nightstand and pulled out the tape my husband, then boyfriend made me back in 1997. It was the first mixed tape he made me and I promised him I would never loose it. Fifteen years later I still have it. I have made sure it stays in my nightstand so it would always be close. For someone who is notorious for loosing everything I think I've done pretty darn awesome that I still have it. Yay me.

So today I am sharing a few, some who am I kidding. I am sharing a lot of songs off the mixed tape that my husband made me many moons ago.

Tuesday Tunes-A blast from the past

This week in honor of the amazingly talented and all around awesome Amanda and her upcoming birthday I will be sharing some music from days passed. But first HAPPY early BIRTHDAY Amanda!!!!

I take you back 12-15 years ago, vision a bleach blond chick wearing holey jeans, inappropriate shirts, vans shoes, smoking, all around kick ass chick. That was me, at least I like to think I was kick ass. My music taste hasn't changed much since the days of high school but the music has. Back then the teeny bop sensations were Britney Spears and N-Sync. :::Insert gag::: Unfortunately I had a younger sister who was very much into them so I was exposed to such atrocities but have no fear, I did not let it take me over. I kept my metal and rock playing loudly, just loud enough to piss off the parental figures and drive them slightly mad. Ahhhh fun times LOL.

One of my favorite bands way back when was Pantera. They are still a favorite of mine and I am always in the mood to hear a good Pantera song. A lot of songs bring back memories of me growing up. Ex boyfriends, parties, hanging out with friends, driving around....oh wait I didn't have a radio in my car. I always get so excited when I hear a Pantera song on the radio. Mind you it's not often and it's usually only at night but it always brings a smile to my face. My absolute favorite song by them is Shedding Skin. The solo is just amazing. Trust me the louder you play this the better.



Now I wasn't an all metal girl. I liked the grunge bands and others in that genre. One band that has a bad rep to it is Hole. You know the whole Courtney Love killed Kurt debacle so everyone hates Courtney and all that she has done. Meh....I don't let it affect my judgement in music. If it's good I say play it.  One of the reasons I loved Hole was because they weren't your typical band that was afraid to touch the things they shouldn't touch on. You want loud, you want inappropriate, raw, and of course some punk thrown into the mix well them Hole is your band.



Metallica. Yes I listened to them but I wasn't one of those crazy people that thought they were the best band ever and the fathers of Heavy Metal. I argued back then that they weren't and I will argue today the same thing. But still you have to appreciate the early Metallica. They were a great band.  I will not however argue what their greatest song was and I don't have a favorite so I just chose at random the song that I am going to share.



And of course it wouldn't be a flash back post without me mentioning Faith No More. A group I still listen to now, they never get old. I know that their most popular song is Epic and what a great song title because the song is Epic. It is my favorite by them and I don't care what people say about Faith No More, they are a great band that was seriously underrated back in the day.

Tuesday Tunes-High Hopes

This week I am reminiscing a bit. I seem to be doing a lot of that lately. The other day while my family and I were driving I was looking out the window at all the greenery and for some reason the grass was greener popped into my head. I always do that. That one lyric just randomly pops into my head every other day or so. Okay maybe not that often but it is quite a bit. This time I said it out loud though and my husband looked at me like I was some nutcase. Not that I can blame him for thinking that though. Here's how it went down;

Me: The grass is greener
Hubs: What?
Me: Dude don't you know what song that is from?
Hubs: :::Insert look you give nutcases here:::
Me: Seriously? You don't know? HOW could you not know? It's only one of the best songs every done by Pink Floyd.
Hubs: Uh I have no idea what song you're talking about
Me: Dude it's that one, you know that one, the one that says the grass is greener!

Yeah, I don't have the best memory so sometimes the name of a specific song will slip my head. This one though there is no excuse for it seeing as it is in my opinion the best song by Pink Floyd and my favorite song by them. And because we live in a wonderful technology filled era I didn't have to wait until we got home to look it up, I just pulled it up on my phone and listened to it right then and there. Yay for technology.

I don't care what generation you are from but EVERYONE, and I mean everyone knows who Pink Floyd is. Even my kids know who the band is and they're just wee youngins. I believe in giving a child a wide variety of music to listen to so they can appreciate all types of music. So far it's working because my oldests (8 yrs old) favorite band is Led Zepplin. How awesome is that! And on that note I will leave you with my favorite Pink Floyd song, High Hopes.

Tuesday Tunes-Marilyn Manson

Oh yes, I am going there. I know there used to be a lot of controversy over this group but I don't buy into that crap. And that's all I will say about that because you don't want me going on a rant, trust me.

Marilyn Manson is one of those bands that I can listen to any time of the day. Doesn't matter if I am in a good mood, bad mood, etc. I will cook to it, clean to it and dance to it. And I have no problems admitting I have a little bit of goth love in my heart. They are another band that it is hard to pick out just a few favorite songs because it's not just their new songs that I like, it's the old one's too. They are all great. My first attraction to the band was how completely different they were to every other band in that time. Imagine little blond 11-12 year old. already listening to metal but annoyed with the selection of music played on the radio. And then I hear Marilyn Manson and the love affair began. I remember buying the cd and hiding it from my mom so she wouldn't know I was listening to such obscenities. Awww the memories.

Tuesday Tunes-Volbeat

I only learned of Volbeat a little over a year ago but from the first time I heard them I loved them. The lead singer Michael Poulsen has the kind of voice that just pulls you in and holds on to you. They aren't too heavy that you can't understand what they're saying and maybe the worlds finally getting smarter but I have even heard them play a few of their songs on the radio. About time they play decent music on the radio. At least that's what I said when I heard them playing Volbeat.
Now if we could take over the world get more music like this played on the radio it would awesome. Heck I might even buy a radio hah.

Tuesday Tunes-A little bit of GNR

In 1985 the band Guns N Roses formed. I was just a wee babe back then so I didn't get to experience the oooh's and ahhh's when they became popular, but ever since I can remember I have been a fan of their music. And here we are, 27 years later and they can still kick ass like no other.

An amazing experience

Last year my husband and I got the privilege to see them perform live and I can honestly say it was hands down, the BEST concert I have ever been to. Axl can pull of those high notes and long notes as if it were 26 years ago. I watched an interview he did a little while back and when asked how he does it he said it is getting harder but does voice exercises to help. Actually he said something more along the lines of....I have no %&^#($) idea LOL. 

There is no possible way to pick just one favorite song by GNR. There's just too many in that pot and this post would probably take a week to read. So I'll just list off a few today.

I may have a slight obsession with the lead guitarist of GNR, DJ Ashba. The man is seriously drool worthy and he has some serious skills. Here's a video of his song that he plays at every concert. I think if I met him in person I'd faint, or loose all ability to speak.

Hello sexy

Everyone knows the popular songs such as Sweet Child O Mine, Paradise City, Don't Cry, Knockin' on Heavens Door, Nightrain, and November Rain but those are what I want to share. While they are all good songs I've never been one to promote the ever popular. Instead I like to promote the unpopular so people can appreciate more then just the over played songs.

So here we go, a "few" songs.





And I just have to share this song because it is actually one of my favorites. Notice I said one of, not the only. Again so many songs to choose from to choose just one but this one does make it to the top of my list.

Tuesday Tunes-Train Drive By

One thing I love about the radio is the volume button, and the ability to switch the channel if you don't like a song. If you ever ride in a car with me I apologize in advance for changing the channel and million and one times. I am constantly switching back and forth between stations to find a song I like. I may not even listen to the entire song before changing the channels again. Annoying right? Heck I even annoy myself sometimes while I am doing it but I can't help it. I get bored very easily listening to the same songs over and over. That's one of the down sides when songs become popular. They get way over played, sometimes ruining the appeal of the song. At least that's how it works in my mind.

That being said I HOPE that this song isn't one that falls into the over played category simply because I am selfish and really like this song and would like to continue to keep it on my upbeat happy go lucky play list.

Oh yeah, what song am I talking about might be helpful information huh. Drive By by Train. I am not really a big Train fan, they have a few songs that are catchy most of them are too poppy for my taste but I just love Drive By. Yes it's poppy and catchy and I sound like a complete hypocrite but it's also romantic and I can't seem to help but turn up the radio whenever I hear it and start singing along and dancing.

Tuesday Tunes-Bringing back the classics

Okay so my generation may not view this band/singer as a classic but in a way it's my own personal classic because hearing any song by Genesis and/or Phil Collins instantly brings me back to my childhood. The good ole 80's. Yes I was an 80's baby. You have two types of 80's people. The people who were old enough to rock it through the 80's and feel those born in the 80's aren't "true" 80's people, and then those of us who were actually born in the 80's. We might not have been able to rock the 80's but that time period still had an impact on our lives. For me it was the music. The hair bands, the new metal and of course the bit of easy going music such as Genesis, Peter Frampton, R.E.M., Michael Jackson, Madonna, Kenny Loggins, Tears for Fears, Fleetwood Mac. I could go on and on but I wont because the list is seriously too long. But you get the idea.

One song that I absolutely LOVE is Land of Confusion by Genesis. I am not sure why it doesn't get much airplay anymore. It is one of those songs that you can see the video playing even though you may be listening to it on the radio. Don't say I am crazy because I see cartoons playing in my head. If you haven't seen the video you might not understand how awesome it is. If you have five minutes to spare sit down and watch this video.



See what I am talking about? That song & video were pure genius.

I remember when this CD came out in 1991. It was the first CD I owned. That and Michael Jacksons Dangerous album. It seems like a life time ago that these bands were the it bands, that music was sang by people with real voices, talent and no machines to duplicate their voices. And that is why I titled this post with the word classics in it. Not to be confused with the real classics from the 1950's and before.

Tuesday Tunes-Tunes that speak to you

Every once in a while there is a song that comes out that completely takes your breath away after hearing it for the first time. You know it's a great song when it continues to do so each and every time you here it there after. For s singer to pull that off with not one but many of their songs takes pure talent. There's no way around it folks. You just cant pull some rhymes out of your bum and expect to be an instant hit.

I recently purchased Christina Perri cd after getting sick of always having to go to YouTube to hear one of her songs. So as I sit here and listen to the cd, I also have it in the car and on my phone. Obsessed much? Eh not really, I just can't stop listening because her music speaks to me.  I first heard of her about two years ago (my timing may be a tad off just because I am bad with timing, but it was some where around 1.5-2 years ago). I am sure you have heard of the song Jar of Hearts. No? Well here, listen....I'll wait.



You hear that natural talent. No special effects on her voice. Just raw beauty. The first time I heard this song I loved it and I have continued to love it every time I hear it on the radio. Then the other day I heard a new song of hers and again, instant love (also if you love Twilight it's on the new soundtrack for the last movie).



I don't know if I can express what it is I love about her music but I will try. Her voice, hello it's amazing. It's real, raw, beautiful, natural. Her lyrics, I am a romantic and I feel that a lot of her songs have to do with romance/love in some way. Not all of her songs do but a few of my favorites do. Ink, she has tattoos which I know some people see as a turn off but I think they're hot. They add to her look and in turn adds a piece to her. Tattoos in my opinion are an expression, a piece of art just not in a showcase room but the showcase is your body. I love tattoos and I am of the mind frame, the more the better.

Tuesday Tunes-Written in the Stars

I like a lot of different types of music. I know I have said I am a metal girl at heart and while I am I still listen to other genres of music and enjoy them equally. Country is not one of those genres though. Now don't go bashing me because I don't like country, I don't hate it but it's just to...twangy for me. Back in the day there were a few country artists I did listen to but not anymore. I am not quite sure why I even brought Country music up as it has nothing to do with my song choice this week. Guess I just wanted to give you a little history. Anywho, being one that tries not to discriminate against different genres I wanted to share something other then heavy music today.

For some reason this song doesn't seem to get much airplay. I am not sure why because I think it's an amazing song. Not only is the beat along with the harmony beautiful but the song itself speaks volumes and has such a good message behind it. From the first time I heard it I stored it in the "favs" memory bank. If you watch the video I dare you not to be touched by it.




I have been known to pull this song up on YouTube and blast it while I am cleaning, and possibly putting it on repeat. What, don't tell me you've never done it ;)

I love finding songs that reach down in you and make you really think. Thing about what the day holds, what life could have been and what life is and in the end being thankful for everything. To me this song does that. Not in a selfish way because I know there are people out there that struggle but it brings a sense of calm and hope that they will all be okay. Not naive, just hopefull.

Tuesday Tunes-Paradise Lost

I am a metal girl at heart. I love heavy songs, deep voices, meaningful lyrics, and a good melody. I have so many bands that I consider my favorites that some may view it as kind of silly. But I am not the type of person that can pick one band and say that's my favorite. Because while they may have some amazing songs I feel it's a disservice to all of the other bands in the same genre. So I am a lover of many. But I can tell you some that I will listen to over and over and it will never get old. One of those bands is Paradise Lost.

My husband and I have always wanted to see them live but sadly they very rarely, if ever play in the states. So imagine my surprise when I found out last week I won tickets to a metal festival in Europe and one of the days Paradise Lost is playing! It was an insane moment for me realizing I get to have two dreams come true. Not only do we get to see a band play that's we've long waited to see BUT we also get to go to Europe for the first time. Insert Shana dancing around like a lunatic and giggling like a school girl. Oh yeah and Anthrax is playing as well as Exodus and Chimaira. Color me excited.

Sorry getting off track. I have been listening to Paradise Lost since I met my husband back in 1997. He introduced me to so many different bands and he used to quiz me on some of them back in the day. Ah fun times. So way back when, when I first listened to Paradise Lost I was instantly ohhh'ing and awww'ing in my head. Love at first listen. Corny maybe but I've mentioned before, I love music. Their sound has changed since they first started but they are like a fine wine, they only get better with age. And with that, I will leave you with two of my favorite songs by Paradise Lost.

Tuesday Tunes-Soul touching tunes

Do you have a song that no matter what your mood may be it always brings you to tears? You know those songs that reach down into your core and pull at your heart strings. There's nothing you can do to stop it, only give in and have a good cry. 

I have two.

The first time I heard Only Time by Enya I bawled. It's such a beautiful song. And after 9-11 they played it a lot. So not only did it make me cry because it's beautiful but from the emotions of 9-11. For a few years after 9-11 if I heard this song I always had a soul cleansing cry. Hearing it made me think of all the things that weren't going right, the negatives and then the tragedies of that fateful day and it would smack me in the face at how grateful I truly am for what I have. To this day it still makes me tear up and every once in a while I will put it on when I need some calming tunes to help me regain my wooosaaa.

Now for the second song. It all started during those good ole days of ER. You remember that show right? Remember when Dr Mark Greene spends his last days with his daughter on the beautiful island of Hawaii. Season 8 episode 21, you know you remember it. It is one of the most widely remembered episodes of the show, the one when he passes away. Peacefully. Insert full and complete breakdown with snot and tears flowing freely. Well does anyone remember the song that was playing during this scene? I do. It was Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole. I loved it the first time I heard it, and then I became a mom and it took on a whole new meaning for me. Every time I hear it I think of my children, from the time they were born until who they are now. And without fail it bring me to tears. Sometimes if I know I need a good cry I will put it on. Of course my kids look at me like I have five noses or something but it does the trick. 

So I have told you what two songs move me to tears and I am wondering if there are others out there that are emotional basket cases beings or if I am alone. Personally I think that everyone out there has at least one song that touches them so deeply they can't help but cry when listening to it. What say you?

Tuesday Tunes-H.I.M. aka my addiction

The beautiful and all around amazing Amanda from High Impact Mom has started a new meme that I think is fantastic. Tuesday Tunes. Being a music lover myself what better way to share your love of music then to share it with others. So as long as I gets my days straight (I have a habit of confusing what day it is) I will be supporting Amanda in her new meme, Tuesday Tunes.

Ever heard of H.I.M.? No not him as in a person but H.I.M. as in the band from Finland. Think Gothic love rock. Ever since I first heard them a few years ago I became instantly obsessed. Okay maybe not obsessed but I do love their music. I am not sure what it is but if I need a pick me up, music to clean to, something to make me smile my go to band is H.I.M. It's the type of music that pulls you in, squeezes you and let's you go feeling as if all is right. And the lead singer isn't bad on the eyes so that may or may not have something to do with it.

Listening to HIM also brings me back memory wise. Now it may not have been that long ago when I started listening to them but that time in my life was full of so many different emotions that it's hard for it not to stir something inside of me. 

It's hard to pick just one because they have so many great songs so I am sharing two of my favorites today. When Love and Death Embrace and Join Me in Death.

Whenever I turn on H.I.M. it's never just to listen to one song. I simply can't do that. I listen to at least an entire albums worth at the very least. It's like an addiction that I just can't seem to give up. But that's totally fine by me. This is one addiction I will welcome with open arms.
